Digitizing the amplitude values of the sample values L = f[i; j] iscalled quantization, the quantization level determines the number of grey levels, that isthe gray resolution in the digitized image. Unlike sampling (where we saw that undersuitable conditions exact reconstruction is possible), quantization is generally irreversibleand results in loss of information. It therefore introduces distortion into the quantizedsignal that cannot be eliminated.
