What is the purpose of the Open Web Notification Standard?
Do you too get e-mails with messages like "You have received a new private message at our forum. Click the following link to view it" or "John Doe wants to be your friend on your-favorite-social-network-here. Do you accept?"
I do. But I think that is not what e-mails were invented for. There should be a way how such short notifications could be standardized and exchanged.
The Open Web Notification Standard (OWNS) defines a couple of rules how clients and applications should exchange such information. It can be implemented in any web application; it relies on XML and HTTP, so client software should therefore be easily set up for it.
Current Version
The current version is 0.1. It defines notifcations, templates, and update rules. Formatting notifications is not supported in 0.1.
