As part of our Masters programme at the University of Amsterdam, we are working to improve the Urban Search and Rescue Simulation (USARSim) software. This software is used for the RoboCup Rescue league (http://www.robocuprescue.org/). We are adding smoke to the simulation, and aim to simulate the behavior of the laser scanners at a reasonable level of detail.
So far, we have made smoke in a number of different ways, each of which has a different application in the simulation:
* Global smoke: the whole level has a amount of smoke
* Regional smoke: an area has a certain amount of smoke
* Local smoke: a little fire which emits smoke
The density of every type of smoke can be adjusted. Each type of smoke can be combined with another. For example, an environment can be created where a fire is burning in a room (local). Throughout this room, there is quite a lot of smoke (regional). In adjacent rooms, a some smoke is present (regional) and everywhere else in the environment
