Sakai Visualization
The objective of this project was to present the communication network of Sakai by visualizing the path of messages sent from contributors of the project.
Given 2G of an early Sakai email archive, we extracted message source and destination domains, then used a reverse look-up method to convert user domains into IP addresses. We then utilized the "http://api.hostip.info" API to convert the IP addresses into geographical coordinates. Some of the domain IP addresses and GML coordinates are not publicly available, and those messages were excluded from the visualization.
The Google Earth API only plots direct paths between two given points. After retrieving the GML coordinates we derived midpoint coordinates between the message source and destination. By connecting these points and adding an altitude element, we were able to produce exaggerated message path trajectories. To produce an animated visualization we added a time stamp
