There are a lot of options for switches: pushbutton (momentary switches), toggle, slide, whisker, etc. But why not try making your own? A switch is simply a mechanism to bring two pieces of conductive material together.
This is an example of an alternative time-telling piece that uses chromatography paper and different solutes and solvents. The solvent carries the pigments in ink solutes to different heights on the paper. In this case the saltwater solvent also serves as a conductive mechanism between to pieces of conductive copper creating natural switch.
When experimenting in Biology or Chemistry you often stumble upon creations, in this case a soft switch, that either create a voltage or can carry a charge. These are great areas to explore because they insert an element of “noise” into projects and blend the lines between the natural and the mechanical.
