The UpWind Project is an OpenSource Project created by the University of Oulu which started in January 2006. The objective is to create Navigation Software for Sailing Boats. The main premises of the project is to make the software modulable, scalable and usable. The main research problem is to find out: “How to display ESRI charts to the user in a clear and understandable format with an acceptable level of performance?” This question can be answered by solving the following issues: * Developing a selective reading for ESRI charts * Adding symbols to the chart * Scaling the chart * The best level of detail for each scale * Getting adequate information content for the symbols * Restricting the level of information * Defining a view for each role in the boat
