Keyhole Markup Language (KML) is an XML-based language schema for
expressing geographic annotation and visualization on existing or
future Web-based, two-dimensional maps and three-dimensional Earth
browsers. KML is a very interesting markup language because its file
structure specifies a set of features (placemarks, images, polygons,
3D models, textual descriptions, etc.) for display in Google Earth,
Maps and Mobile, or any other 3D earth browser (geobrowser)
implementing the KML encoding. KML has become the HTML of geographic
content, the dominant way to share user-created maps online. There are
now tens of millions of KML files available online, hosted on more
than 100,000 unique domain names. KML is supported by a large and
growing number of vendors and products, and can no longer simply be
described as Google Earth"s file format.
