The environment variable settings of one process may be different from another one. This tool could help in digging more on the details of the variables, and good for both x86 and x64.
You could follow the same way to change the variables (add new / modify value / delete), and it works fine under XP and Server 2003.
On Server 2008 and Win7, the enhanced security checks of Windows will find such changes in the target process, and the operating system will immediately "insert" one more thread to that process, and cause it to crash.
