This project describes the design of a system for controlling an electric wheelchair, originally intended as a robot fit for extinguishing fires. Hardware was adapted to fit the wheelchair in order to support pneumatic controls and variable speed control.
The system can be divided into the following key hardware pieces:
* Single-board computer
* Microcontroller(MCU) board
* Wireless access point
The electronics consists of a TS7260 SBC for achieving easy wireless control via wifi, MCU(8051) to perform PWM and solenoid control of the wheelchair. The TS7260 and the separate MCU board communicate via RS232 while commands are received wirelessly.
The wireless control is performed using the on-board ethernet of the TS7260 SBC connected to a wireless access point. The access point is used to connect a laptop running the Borland MainControl application for motion and solenoid control. For safety purposes, the system utilized TCP sockets with zero tolerance on pack
