The original makeself was compatible with many UNIX systems, but lacked some important features for modern nix usability. This version breaks support for some few older unix systems, while adding support for:
long-filename-with-spaces
executing from current working directory (makes compressed executables indistingishable from original)
LZO, lzop compression.
While the original was mostly only useful between trusted peers, This version should make ready-to-use, all-in-one executables useful for distribution as run-without-installing or just-drop-in-the-path applications. Still under development is adding support for PATH, DIRPATH, and LIBPATH, so no integration with the user"s system is ever necessary (obviously, these types of apps should be static, so libraries should only be needed for optional dependencies).
