The protocol is based on the standard HTML link-tag, which allows web pages to provide related links. Relations with the string identifier "hud" are enabled for display with a WebHUD-compliant plugin. While the precise operation of the plugin is implementation-specific, the general idea is to open the links in a new browser inside a window overlay on top of the primary web browser. This allows proper separation of the web page and the head-up-display without losing context. Currently, an extension for the Safari browser on Mac OS X is under development (nearing completion).
