Numericmoney is an attempt to developp and spread a free international electronic money system.
Here is the main idea :
A central server contains some large random numbers, large enough so the probability of guessing one can be ignored.
Anyone can buy the creation of one number for a cost of 0.01€.
On the contrary, the server administrators agree to pay 0.01€ to anyone who can quote a number in their database.
Moreover, a public internet application service allow anyone to exchange some numbers against some new ones.
Here is the way a person "A" can give money to another person "B" :
"A" first communicates to "B" the appropriate quantity of numbers (100 for 1€, 1000*100=100000 for 1000€, etc.)
To do so he can use any kind of data communication channel.
