The CSE hierarchy has decided that it needs a more substantial site for its alumni, to allow them to keep better contact with CSE, and to allow CSE to keep better track of their achievements. The site will have similar elements yet different of the popular social networking sites such as FaceBook, MySpace but it will be tailored to suit graduate requirements of CSE and the site will be more intuitive and impressive.
The simple answer is: control of the data resource. Social networking sites are, by their nature, relatively open and provide a particular view of the data to users. CSE would like more control over access to the data and its appearance so it can be easily intergrated into the CSE faculty homepage. Of course, it would also be useful to leverage the data that people have already put on their social networking accounts.
