I think that Digitone as it is right now has hit its limit. Java is quite a flexible and powerful language, but when trying to handle large images, it tends to degrade pretty quickly. I wanted to add layer support, and when trying to composite 3-4 images at 6000x6000 or more, things got really slow and it became a memory hog.
That being said, as a proof of concept, I think it made its point. It is possible to create screentones on the fly that look almost like the real thing. That is why I have decided to port the program to C++/OpenGL for speed and the ability to work on larger images.
Therefore, v.0.5 is the last Java version of Digitone. Next release will be in C++. I"ll try to offer binaries for Windows and Linux whenever possible, but you can always compile from source.
